Oceanic OceanPro BCD Review

Our tester connecting the inflator and regulator hoses to the Oceanic OceanPro BCD on a concrete quay
Rigging up on the quay before a shore dive. Nothing about the OceanPro setup needs a second pair of hands, which matters when you are the only one on the dock.
Oceanic OceanPro jacket style BCD shown from the front against a plain studio background
Jacket style through and through, with air wrapping around the waist and the weight pockets sitting front and center. That familiar shape is a big part of why dive centers keep buying it for students.
Our tester holding the Oceanic OceanPro BCD inflator and corrugated hose in one hand
The inflate and deflate buttons sit right where your thumb lands, so you can trim your buoyancy by feel instead of looking down at the hose.
Close look at the round shoulder dump valve and its pull cord on the Oceanic OceanPro BCD
A corded dump valve on the shoulder lets you vent air without lifting the inflator hose, which is handy when you are flat in trim and do not want to break position.
Cam band strap on the back of the Oceanic OceanPro BCD holding a scuba cylinder in place
One cam band does the whole job of carrying the tank. On a unit that has been through hundreds of dive students, this buckle is the first part worth checking for wear.
Close-up of a shoulder D ring and the Oceanic branded quick release buckle on the OceanPro BCD
The D ring sits high on the shoulder where most divers clip a gauge or a torch, and the buckle underneath releases with one pull rather than a two handed fumble.
Close-up of the corrugated hose valve where it meets the shoulder of the Oceanic OceanPro BCD
This is where the corrugated hose joins the bladder. Chunky, plain and serviceable, which is exactly what you want on a BCD that spends its life in rental rotation.

Are you a newer diver looking for a solid BCD that will stand the test of time? Or perhaps you’re a seasoned sea dog with plenty of dives under your weight belt looking for a workhorse. In either case, the Oceanic OceanPro BCD could be just the ticket.

Oceanic’s entry-level BCD is tough enough to withstand a few knocks and has just the right amount of features for recreational scuba. It’s a dive center rental favorite for these reasons and it’s been spotted in many a pro’s dive bag too.

Buy This BCD If:

You’re after a solid jacket-style BCD, in which case this is really a no-brainer. It’ll get the job done for years to come and it’s comfortable enough for long dives or hours spent in confined (if you’re a professional). For dive centers, The OceanPro offers the perfect balance of cost, quality, and ease of use. Highly recommended.

Things we like:

  • Highly durable and can take a beating
  • The padding around the shoulders is comfortable
  • Adjustable cummerbund so the BCD should still fit you should you lose of gain a little weight
  • LPI feels comfortable in the hand and the inflate and deflate buttons perform well underwater
  • LPI dump valve operates by pulling the LPI down (perfect for lazy dive instructors!)
  • Trim weight pockets
  • Integrated weights, which is unusual on an entry-level BCD
  • Classic jacket style for recreational diving

Things we don't like:

  • Plastic D-rings
  • Basic BCD

Why buy from Amazon?

Amazon has a documented Prime delivery program that covers millions of items, and that is the most concrete order-related support behind buying here.

Worth knowing

Some customers report slower replies or needing more follow-up than expected when they asked for help after ordering. If an order needs post-purchase support, that part of the experience is not always smooth.

Some customers also report delivery problems after ordering. That keeps follow-up and delivery as the areas to watch if you place the order here.

DIVEIN's take
Why buy from House of Scuba?

House of Scuba publishes a defined return process for eligible items, including when credit or a refund applies and where fees or exclusions can affect the outcome. If you want the retailer's own terms in place before ordering, that is the most concrete reason to buy here.

It also states a continental U.S. free-shipping offer with exclusions, so the order terms are not left entirely to guesswork. That does not guarantee every item qualifies, but the policy itself is part of the buying case.

Worth knowing

Some customers describe friction around returns or refunds, and some also report slower replies or needing extra follow-up when they asked for help after ordering. Read the return terms closely before placing the order, especially the condition, packaging, and fee limits that can change the result.

What You Need to Know About the Oceanic OceanPro BCD

Let’s take a look at some of the OceanPro’s key features:

We mentioned earlier that this is a workhorse of a BCD. It’s been designed to be tough and durable so it can certainly withstand a few knocks or a day left out in the sun (even though we don’t recommend treating your BCD that way!).

Oceanic markets this unit as an entry-level option, and it’s priced accordingly making it an enduring favorite with dive centers as a rental BCD. The tough denier nylon can handle endless dive students so it can certainly handle even the most demanding recreational diver.

Oceanic OceanPro BCD set up with mask and fins on a seawall before a test dive
This is how the OceanPro spends most of its life: hauled down to the shore with a mask and fins and expected to just work.

The OceanPro comes with integrated weight pockets as standard, but if you prefer to use a belt, these are easily removed. The pockets are simple to operate and you won’t struggle to slot the weighted pockets into the BCD while you’re wearing it, which can be an issue with some integrated BCD models.

Additionally, the quick-release system is swift when you want it to be but reliably secure when there’s no need to drop weights.

There are two trim weight pockets at the rear of the BCD near the tank strap. Newer divers and experienced divers alike will appreciate the chance to balance out their weighting (trim) with these. Each holds the equivalent of a 2-pound or 1-kilogram weight.

Integrated Weights and Trim Weight Pockets

Trim weight at the back balances you out and stays put even if you ditch the main pockets. Those front pockets come out entirely if you would rather dive a belt.

Pockets and D-Rings

Shoulder D-ring and quick release buckle on the Oceanic OceanPro worn by our tester
Plastic instead of stainless is the compromise here, but with eight rings spread across the jacket you are never short of somewhere to clip an SMB or a reel.

The OceanPro’s D-rings are, unfortunately, plastic instead of stainless steel. But that said, it does have eight rings in total, so more than enough to clip on accessories such as an SMB and a reel.

Additionally, there are two decent sized pockets on either side of the BCD. These are generous enough to fit larger items such as a spare mask or dive torch. The zipper closure is preferable to a velcro closure as the latter tends to wear out over time. So long as you keep the heavy-duty zippers clean (no sand and salt) and run a little silicone over the teeth from time to time, they should last well.

Dump Valves

Close-up of the Oceanic OceanPro's rear dump valve and corrugated inflator hose
Two pull dumps plus the inflator means you can vent from whatever position you happen to be in, which matters more than it sounds once you are sorting out trim.

In addition to the standard left-hand shoulder dump and the bum dump (which is really only useful if you’re in an uncontrolled accent situation with your bum in the air), the OceanPro BCD is equipped with a rapid release on the LPI. To activate this, pull the LPI down and slightly away from your body. The release dumps air faster than releasing air from the LPI’s dedicated deflate button.

The BCD is also equipped with an automatic overpressure dump valve (a standard feature on all BCDs) to protect the bladder from bursting if it is inflated too much.

Oceanic’s After Sales and Servicing Support

Oceanic’s BCD warranty covers you for five years from the date of purchase on materials and manufacturing. You should have your BCD serviced every year. When we talk about getting BCD serviced, you’re mainly looking to ensure there are no rips or tears in the bladder and that the LPI has been kept in good working condition.

Oceanic has a great reputation for after-sales and servicing support. The company, which is now part of Huish Outdoors, is headquartered in the United States, but if you purchased an Oceanic BCD (or any other Oceanic scuba kit) overseas you can contact Oceanic by filling in a form here.

Summary

The Oceanic OceanPro BCD is a reliable piece of dive gear that should last you for years to come. Although marketed as an entry-level BCD, and priced accordingly, it boasts some features you won’t always find on cheaper BCDs, such as an integrated weight system and a high-quality LPI.

If you’re after a jacket-style BCD to take you from Open Water and beyond, you can’t go wrong. Likewise, adventurous recreational divers will find plenty about the OceanPro they love.
